Episode 15: The Desert Island Podcast

Play

I have 54 questions of varying degrees of seriousness. We’ll get through as many as we can.

Scenario: You are suddenly trapped on a mythical desert island.
Assume most/all of these questions will be/are followed up with “Why?”

Questions:

  1. Assuming you still have your phone or iPod in your pocket, what is the first song you listen to?
  2. What handheld game on your phone would you play?
  3. Assume you had a handheld game console in a different pocket. What console would you take?
  4. What game would you wish to have along?
  5. What movie would you wish you had on your phone?
  6. If you had Avatar on your phone, would you watch it?
  7. What book would you wish to have along for entertainment purposes?
  8. If you could have any movie star for company on the island, who would you choose?
  9. If you could have any dead person on the island for company, who would you choose?
  10. Why would you want a dead person on the island with you?
  11. Pretend you didn’t choose J.J.Abrams, why not?
  12. Would you try to walk around the island?
  13. How long do you assume you could survive, provided the island contained resources capable for survival?
  14. From the time you landed on shore, how long would it take you to get a fire going?
  15. From the time you landed on shore, how long before you would attempt to build a shelter?
  16. Would you attempt to keep track of time? How?
  17. What is the first tool you would attempt to make? What would you make it with?
  18. What skill do you have that you feel would help you survive the best?
  19. What would be the hardest thing for you to emulate or recreate?
  20. What (non-electronic) tool would you wish you had with you on the island?
  21. Assume that the island was large enough for a small jungle and a nice beach. Where would you take shelter?
  22. Where would you sleep?
  23. Where would you spend most of your time?
  24. On the off chance that there is no fresh water on the island, do you feel you are capable of filtering sea water to make it safe to drink?
  25. What food would you hope is on the island?
  26. What food would you undoubtedly miss from the “civilized world?”
  27. How long would it take for you to develop a recipe book?
  28. On the off chance you still had cell reception at this point and your phone was still in working order, would you start a blog for deserted island recipes?
  29. What would you call your blog?
  30. Still assuming you had a working cell phone, with data, but no calling or GPS. What app or service would you use to contact help?
  31. If you received an email from your boss at this point asking for tech support, how would you respond?
  32. Say your phone had a dead battery. Would you still hold onto it?
  33. If you could have a pet with you, what kind of animal would it be? What’s it’s name?
  34. Say there are wild animals on the island. What types of animals would you be willing to catch/kill/eat?
  35. Are there any you wouldn’t be willing to catch or eat?
  36. Would you focus on seafood or land food?
  37. Would you attempt to domesticate any of the animals on the island?
  38. Upon domestication of the animals, how many of them would you name?
  39. Of the ones you named, how many would have names reminiscent of friends and family who now assume you are dead?
  40. What is the ideal temperature of the island you crashed on?
  41. What is the ideal time of day for you to find yourself initially stranded?
  42. What is your prefered method of transport to the island?
  43. Assume other people crashed here with you. What steps would you take to establish civilization?
  44. What trade would you take up in the new society?
  45. How long would it take you to rise to power in your small civilization?
  46. What style of government would you set up?
  47. Would you attempt any mining on the island?
  48. Say the island had a large supply of rare gems. Would you gather them?
  49. Say you actually made it off the island. How long before you decided to go back?
  50. Assume the island came with an option for either a large entertainment system or a nice comfy chair. Which would you choose?
  51. Assume you had to choose between glass bottles or steel knives. Which would be more valuable to you?
  52. Say you found that the island was easily accessible and unclaimed by anyone of consequence. Given the option, would you move there?
  53. Assume that instead of an island, you discovered that you were actually on a beach in Florida. How long would you have to have attempted to live there before you would feel really foolish that you never explored fully enough to find civilization?
  54. Bear Grylls or Les Stroud?
